Description

Brezhnev's Strategic War Game: NATO vs. Warsaw Pact in Germany, 1980 lets two players simulate the first month of a hypothesized communist invasion of Western Europe between the fall of Saigon and the start of the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan. During this period, the conventional power balance favored the communists. The scenario was highly anticipated and feared by NATO intelligence analysts. Instead of starting with massive chemical and nuclear strikes, which would lead to immediate nuclear retaliation, it imagines a 'come as you are' war where Soviet units in East Germany cross into West Germany using only conventional weapons within a month. The Soviets would call for a cease - fire before nuclear or chemical weapons are used or the Atlantic community's economic power is fully engaged. This would neutralize West Germany, a key NATO member in Europe, and wreck its Ruhr industrial area. The 50” x 35” map covers the core of the Federal Republic of Germany at 6.66 miles (10.8 km) per hex. There are 352 large - size (5/8”) unit counters representing on - scene and potential reinforcement units. Each of the 10 game turns represents three days of real - time. The turn sequence follows a classic fight - move or move - fight structure. Special rules cover various aspects like heliborne units, special forces, and more. The overall system is simple (about 6 on a 1 - 10 scale), and two experienced players can finish a match in 4 - 6 hours.

To play this game, first, set up the 50” x 35” map on a flat surface. Place the 352 large - size (5/8”) unit counters on the appropriate hexes according to the game's initial setup. Each player takes on the role of either NATO or the Warsaw Pact. The turn sequence is either fight - move or move - fight. Remember, each of the 10 game turns represents three days of real - time. Pay attention to the special rules, like those for heliborne units and special forces. If you're new to the game, take some time to understand these rules. When playing, think about the strategic goals, like the importance of West Germany and the Ruhr industrial area. After the game, carefully put the unit counters back in their storage and roll up the map gently. Store them in a cool, dry place to keep them in good condition. Have fun playing and strategizing!
