After 9/11, a multinational coalition stepped in to eliminate al - Qaeda and oust the hardline - Islamist Taliban regime. A swift invasion and regime change promised peaceful reconstruction and good governance, but that didn't happen. The Taliban rebuilt in their sanctuary across the Pakistan border, starting an insurgency that trapped the Coalition in Afghan rivalries, shifting loyalties, and warlordism, which the West initially barely understood. A Distant Plain uses the same easy - to - play game system as GMT's Andean Abyss, but comes with new factions, capabilities, events, and goals. For the first time in the series, two counter - insurgent (COIN) factions must align their views on Afghanistan to fight a dangerous double - insurgency. New strategic challenges await!
