Nevsky is an engaging board wargame that recreates the epic clash between Latin Teutonic and Orthodox Russian powers on the Baltic frontier in the mid - 13th Century. It's the first in GMT Games’ Levy & Campaign Series, focusing on pre - industrial military operations. In this game, players build and equip their armies, then lead them to plunder enemy lands or win battles. Feudal politics mean lords and vassals serve for limited times, so players need to watch the calendar and reward them to keep the troops in the field. Nevsky is great for solo play or has a rules option with screens to hide levy details. There's also an option to add more info about vassal service terms. Two players take on the roles of the 'Russians', representing Novgorod and its allies, and the 'Teutons', made up of German and Danish landholders expanding a Baltic domain. Every 40 days, both sides levy forces with the support of political authorities. Wooden pieces represent different units, and assets include transport, food, and coins. Players plan 40 - day campaigns using command cards. Map pieces show maneuvers, and a feudal calendar shows how long lords will serve. In battles, players arrange their forces to rout the enemy. Event and capability cards add cultural and technological details to the game.
How to play: First, decide if you're playing solo or with a friend. If two - player, one takes the Russian side and the other the Teutonic side. Every 40 days, levy your lords and vassals, and lay out their forces on the mat. Plan your campaign using the command cards. Remember, the sequence of activating lords matters. Move your lords around the map using the cylinder pieces. In battles, arrange your forces on the left, right, center, and reserve to try and defeat the enemy. Keep an eye on the feudal calendar to know how long your lords will serve. Use the event and capability cards to your advantage. Things to note: Make sure you understand the rules for each option, especially the one with screens and the vassal service details.
